A Landmark Achievement: Honoring Our Commitment to Youth Empowerment

May 2024

In May 2024, a significant milestone was achieved by the Alpha Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter as we were honored with the esteemed Governor's Service Award. This recognition stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to serving the youth in our community, marking a pivotal moment in our history.

This award celebrated our relentless efforts to empower and uplift young individuals through mentorship, educational programs, and community engagement. Our members have tirelessly dedicated countless hours to create transformative experiences that foster growth, resilience, and leadership among youth. This moment not only reflects our collective achievements but also highlights the profound impact we strive to make in the lives of young people.

Over the past year, our chapter dedicated more than 400 hours to community service, volunteering at notable institutions such as Hope of Winston Salem, SECU Family House, Second Harvest Food Bank, Ken Carlson Boys and Girls Club, and March of Dimes. Our participation in the Adopt a Highway program further exemplifies our commitment to community involvement.

As we look back on this remarkable achievement, we are filled with pride and gratitude for the opportunity to inspire and uplift the youth. This moment in history serves as a reminder of our mission and the enduring legacy we aim to create for future generations. Together, we will continue to champion the cause of youth empowerment and make a lasting difference in our community.

This day stands as a testament to the commitment and contributions of the Alpha Mu Sigma/Twin City Chapter and its members, celebrating their legacy and ongoing impact in the community.

Celebrating Alpha Mu Sigma/Twin City Day

and Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelley Day

June 16, 2018

On this day, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. - Alpha Mu Sigma/Twin City Chapter was honored with two proclamations from the City of Winston-Salem Mayor, Alan Joines. The proclamations were presented by two distinguished officials: North Carolina Representative Evelyn Terry and Mayor Pro Tempore Dr. Vivian Burke. This momentous occasion marked the official recognition of Alpha Mu Sigma/Twin City Day and Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelley Day.

The celebration included honoring Rhoers, recognizing birthdays, congratulating former officers, inducting new officers, and engaging in community service at the Naomi Jones Resource Center.

Mayor Joines proclaimed June 16, 2018, as Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. - Alpha Mu Sigma/Twin City Alumnae Chapter and Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelley Day. The Alpha Mu Sigma Chapter is notable for being the first Sigma Gamma Rho Alumnae chapter chartered in North Carolina, providing essential graduate advisors to the undergraduate chapters at Winston-Salem State University (Rho Chapter) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Omicron Eta).

Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelley has been a pivotal figure in the chapter, having provided exemplary leadership for two consecutive terms, during which she significantly increased the chapter's membership. A retired Associate Professor of Microbiology from Winston-Salem State University, Dr. Porter-Kelley was pursuing her passion for service as she worked towards becoming a minister, completing an advanced degree in Divinity Studies at Wake Forest University School of Divinity.

Dr. Porter-Kelley remains an influential figure in the Winston-Salem community.
