Minnie Evans Scholarship

Be on the Lookout for the
2026-27 Scholarship Application
The Minnie Evans Scholarship for Nursing Students at Winston-Salem State University honors the legacy of Minnie Bell Jackson Evans, a distinguished nurse, community leader, and lifelong advocate for health equity. A proud graduate of Atkins High School in 1956, Ms. Evans earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Winston-Salem State University in 1960, during a time when the institution was known as Winston-Salem Teachers College. Her nursing career began at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital, one of the first integrated hospitals, and she later served with dedication at Forsyth Memorial Hospital (now Novant Health), where she made significant contributions over an impressive 40-year career.
Ms. Evans was not only a skilled nurse but also a passionate community servant. Her involvement in numerous organizations exemplified her commitment to reducing health disparities and promoting awareness within her community. She was a longstanding member of First Baptist Church, where she held the title of Gold Star member for over 70 years. Her leadership extended to the Women’s Progression Club and the Queen Esther Missionary Circle, and she was actively engaged in mentorship as a former Girl Scout Troop Leader and a member of the Senior Choir, where she joyfully sang alto.
As a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Chi Eta Phi, a professional organization for registered nurses and student nurses, Ms. Evans championed initiatives focused on disease prevention, health promotion, and community outreach. Her commitment to leadership development, research, and scholarship opportunities has helped pave the way for future generations of nurses.
Through this scholarship, we honor Minnie Evans not only as a professional trailblazer but also as a dedicated mentor who nurtured the next generation of nursing leaders. With this scholarship, we aim to continue her legacy by supporting aspiring nurses who share her passion for service, community health, and excellence in the nursing profession.
